Current 3D Designs Requiring Glasses

3D visuals are achieved by showing your eye two separate images, causing your brain’s visual functions to display depth, which is

lacking in 2 dimensional images.  Currently, 3D effects are achieved typically by visual aids, such as polarizer or shutter glasses that

the user must wear in order to view in 3D.  Glasses are cumbersome, uncomfortable, and may cause dizziness and vertigo with some

population of users.  3D displays requiring the use of active stereoscopic technology, such as shutters, also require expensive battery

charged electronic glasses in order to work.  3D displays using polarizer technology have high production costs, in addition to requiring

users to wear visual aids.  Most current 3D movies in theaters are using polarizer technology.


Disadvantages of 3D Requiring Glasses:

  • Requires cumbersome and uncomfortable glasses

  • May cause dizziness and nausea in some people

  • Active stereoscopic shutter glasses are expensive

  • Limited number of viewers due to glasses in many homes

Current Available Technology of Glasses-Free 3D

Current auto-stereoscopic 3D technology, whether they utilize parallax barrier or lenticular technology typically requires high costs such

as double layer panels, or expensive lenticular printing, to achieve naked-eye 3D viewing that is not ideal for displaying the full depth of

3D images and videos.  Lenticular technology has been around for a very long time, such as in “magic-eye” cards and toys from the

1980s.  Lenticular printing allows the eye to see separate images, but is limited in the amount of images to the amount of limited angles

that the lenticular etching can provide.  This causes a drastic reduction of resolution, and is impractical for motion video viewing.

Current parallax barrier solutions do not achieve the level of 3D effectiveness desired, and has disadvantages such as lowered

brightness, lowered resolution, and flat imaging.

Disadvantages of Current Glasses Free 3D Designs

  • Lenticular designs do not achieve desired 3D effect due to drastic reduction of resolution

  • Current parallax barrier solutions does not have sufficient brightness and resolution for best effect

  • Other parallax barrier solutions offer limited to very limited view angles, often at 45 degrees or less

  • Some glasses free solutions display highly visible lines or other distractions

  • Other glasses free solutions does not achieve the desired 3D effect, creating “flat” looking images

  • Current designs may require expensive dual layer panels in order to create the visual barrier for separation of R/L images for 3D viewing
